Yes, I agree one thousand percent! I have two PK232 units (well one is a
heathkit HK version ... hi hi) and they beat the pants off any software /
computer only operation under severe band conditions. Sorry, sound cards
just are not up to this task under the most demanding situations, and it is
good to move cpu load off your computer as much as possible to external
devices.
Yep, one PK-232MBX has a lot of modifications in it. Filter caps on many
chips to reduce pcb power run noise, rom upgrades as needed, and ran on a
separate power supply from other equipment (this is good for all devices in
the ham shack for isolation). It works very well with my FT-1000MP in many
modes. Dont forget to get the Timewave DSP and PSK/Sound Card Interface Kit
( http://www.timewave.com/PK232PSK.html ). The DSP is a great modern upgrade
to a already great tnc. The sound interface is a software switchable bypass
for your cable interface. Direct to the computer, or through the Pk232 Tnc.
This way you get away from the interface problems with computer and tnc
cable hook ups. Both can be done on one set of cables, and you have the same
isolation provided for either operation. Some software out there will detect
this interface and switch it automatically as needed!
