This sounds like what happens when the VCO quits working. I have not seen it
be intermittent before. Try changing bands when this happens to see if it is
related to a range of frequencies. The VCO ranges are 0.1 to 3.999 mHz, 4.0
to 7.499 mHz, 7.5 to 14.499 mHz, 14.5 to 21.999 mHz and 22.0 to 30.0 mHz.
What I found was that there are some leads on each VCO circuit that appear
to be small inductors, you can't tell for sure because there is a metal
shield over the top of this part of the circuit. The solder joints to these
leads have given me problems on several of the VCOs. I just fixed the 10
meter VCO yesterday. There are lots of surface mount parts on the VCO board.
Look for wire leads. I think the basic problem is the leads have poor
solderability and you eventually have the joint open.
