Subject: [MWA] FS: FT1000mp & SDR discussion
Mike, KM0T, has reduced the price he is asking for the two FT1000MPs he has
for sale. New price is $1,500 each. Both are loaded with filters and
have some of the InRad mods. You can check them out along with pictures
and info at http://www.km0t.com/pages/forsale.htm . Mikes' email is
KM0T at arrl.net .
I was down at Mikes house last Sat. evening and had an opportunity to play
with his SDR-1000 Flex Radio on 40m CW. Its very interesting. I can see
where the SDR-1000 is not for everyone (at this time) as it really helps to
be PC, radio, and signal analysis knowledgeable to gain the most out of this
design approach. The panadapter screen is about two orders of magnitude
more useable than those on other "standard" radios and the concept of
clicking around the band takes some time to get use to ; its simply
different. The screen refresh rate and resolution are very good ....
again, not in the same class whatsoever as those you may be familiar with on
Icom/Yaesu/Kenwood, etc .... the SDR does circles around those. Filtering
is awesome. On the downside, the software has some latency between CW
"send" (like in VOX) and real world timing .... a built-in design flaw due
to the software nature of the radio. Using a manual PTT (foot switch) is
one solution. Also the ability to aggressively operate split is a bit more
difficult. I am not sure that it is a good HF contesting radio (yet ?)
.... in my opinion the jury is out on this, but it sure appears to be an
awesome DXing radio at a minimum. The support & design group are very very
active with lots of discussion. Curious if any other MWAers have spun the
knob on this technology or perhaps own a SDR ?
