Additional clarification regarding installation of the roofing filter mod
in the Mark V:
First, the FT1000MP and the FT1000MP Mark V differ in that the MP has a
power connector that mates with the the roofing filter. No soldering is
required: the user merely plugs in the board and the two 70 MHz IF coax
signals. The following procedure is for Mark V users only. It does not
apply to the MP.
Unlike the MP, The FT1000MP Mark V does not have the mating power
connector installed in the IF area. Instead, INRAD supplies two pins
that are soldered thru the IF printed circuit board (PCB) where the
vacant connector is located. When I attempted this procedure,
considerable heat was required to heat the pin and re-flow solder, to an
extent that I was not comfortable applying the amount of heat required to
get the pin to push-thru and flow to the board.
Instead, I formed a small 2" length of twisted pair wire, and soldered
the ends to the two vias (+5VDC and ground) on the top of the FT1000 IF
PCB. The opposite ends of the twisted pair are then soldered to the two
pins supplied by INRAD, and the pins in turn are pressed into the
appropriate +5 VDC and ground connections of the 5 pin receptacle located
on the roofing filter board.
As mentioned, a very small amount of liquid flux allows for easy surface
mount connection of the twisted pair to the vias on the Mark V.
I believe you'll find this method much easier than pressing the pins
directly thru the MP Mark V IF board.
