[1000mp] Quadra Amplifier

Hi Mike,

The 2.5 kVA switching PSU module in the VP-1000 power supply is an OEM
component (VS Part No. Q7000258), and is considered non-repairable.

VS does not publish a schematic of the module in the Quadra service manual,
so I would not think that any shop would be very keen to tackle it. Yaesu
USA will be able to replace the module, but I believe the price is in the
USD 2000 region.

It would be interesting to know which components the Yaesu USA service
centre replaced. It is likely that the lightning surge destroyed
high-voltage switching transistors and/or diodes in the primary mains
circuit.

Did you check with your homeowners' insurance carrier? You may well have
coverage for lightning damage. In 1998, a near strike destroyed a Hy-Gain
vertical, two TV sets and two VCR's at my former home in Florida. I obtained
attestations from repair shops to the effect that these items were damaged
beyond economical repair, and my insurer paid out replacement value less a
$500 deductible. As Yaesu USA have already stated that your Quadra is not
economically repairable, your insurer may be willing to pay towards a
replacement.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Subject: [1000mp] Quadra Amplifier

I have a Quadra amplifier that needs repair. A lightning strike close to my
house tripped the
main house breaker controlling its circuit and the breaker on the Quadra
power supply tripped.
The amplifier was NOT connected to an antenna at the time lightning hit.
I sent it to Yaesu and they said, after replacing numerous components, that
it was not economically
feasible to continue repair. I sent it to another "reputable" place and they
gave me the run around, so I'm not sure
they even looked at it. Does anyone have any suggestions on a GOOD Yaesu
repair place. I hate to scrap it.
The amp portion may still be good.

Thanks, Mike, N4EPD
