Charlie,
I have the same situation here, that is, my old MP will not function in
the USB-Packet mode, however, for PSK thats not really important since
the mode is not sideband dependent. It will work FB in the LSB mode.
Now when it comes to some of the other sideband dependent modes such as
MT63, Olivia then you do run into a problem. I solved this by using the
microHAM router interface that switches automatically the way the MP
gets the audio in and out of the rig as I setup for the desired sideband
mode. I run USB for the digital modes that require it, or should I say
is the excepted sideband, and use the packet input on the back for those
modes that are not sideband dependent.
I love the PKT - Digital input on the back of the rig since you still
can use the filters and they are setup for the selected tone pairs,
either the low or high tone. I use successfully the digital input for
MFSK16, RTTY, PSK and HELL, for MT63 and or Olivia I use the USB
microphone input. You may need to adjust the packet to lower tones
selection and also setup the reverse-normal keying. You can also do
that via most software programs but I prefer to have the rig determine
the default reverse keying for the FSK RTTY and Packet modes.
I'm sure you will enjoy digital modes, just remember that you want to
limit the power output since its considered a 100% duty cycle and when
you use any sound card program limit the ALC to zero, no processor if
your using the mic input, with digital input you do not have to worry..
There is a MARs setup for the MP's that allows for a USER mode using the
PKT/LSB but it actually appears as USB, with my vintage rig I couldn't
get that mod (All software via the menus) to function as well as I
wanted but you might want to give it a try. Check out the FT1000MP web
