Historians believe that in newspost <op.steerpmd7bpplk at smtp.comcast.net>
on Mon, 4 Jul 2005, w3sz <w3sz at comcast.net> penned the following
literary masterpiece:
>I have been put off from building the CDG2000 because of the nightmare
>of parts procurement.
>
>But if some one or some organization put together a kit as was first
>done privately and then by TAPR for the DSP-10, I would leap at the
>chance to build and own a CDG2000. I know that the boards and some
>'hard-to-find' parts are available, but those items only scratch the
>surface of what is needed to build the CDG2000.

Then look instead at the Picastar, also published in Radcom, which is
what I have nearly completed. Mine has been working on Rx for some while
now, just a question of finding the time to box it up and finish the tx
PA.

The Picastar again uses an H-mode mixer, goes to a 10.695Mhz (or
whatever you choose) IF via a narrow Xtal filter and then down to 15khz
for the full DSP Rx and Tx control/generation. Due to using Toko coils
in the front end narrow bandpass filters, the IP3 is only +30 or so and
they are the limiting factor. Lodestone cores would be better.

The only 'difficult' to obtain bit now is those Toko coils but
Lodestones could be used. It's not that difficult to build and as
someone who hasn't done anything of this size before, I have surprised
myself in how straightforward it is.

The non-surprise is that the Rx performance is better than my 1000mp.

Full pdf details are on the Picastar yahoogroup in the files section.
Alternatively I have a 4-5Mb composite pdf of all the Radcom articles if
you are interested.
