When you decrease the value of menu 9-1 the S/N-ratio will improve, but... 
there will be a noticable distortion when receiving very strong signals.

I did a lot of tests with my Field, particularly on 3,6 MHz, and decreasing 
the value of 9-1 from 14 (my default setting) to 13, 12, 11 and 10 will 
result in more and more distortion with really strong signals.

Just try it yourself.

Perhaps it's better to use the ATTenuator to get a more pleasant S/N-ratio.
