[1000mp] roofing filter and menu 9.1

Hello Bob:

Use your ears to tell you what the best signal to noise ratio is....tune a
S0 SSB station, and adjust the menu 9-1 to give the best readability, with
the preamp on (meaning the IPO lamp is not lit, say on 20 meters.

Adjust the menu downward from the factory setting 2, 3, or 4 numbers, and
pick the one which makes the weak signal easiest to copy.

If you pick three numbers down, your S meter calibration will be more or
less the same as before the mod. If you pick two numbers down, signals will
read a little higher on the meter than before, and if you pick 4 numbers
down, signals will read a little lower on the meter than before the mod.

Of course, you can then go back a perform an S meter calibration after you
change the IF gain setting if you want to achieve 50 microvolts equal to S9
on the meter, with the tuned preamp on.

It is really not important that the meter be precise. What is important is
to be able to copy the weakest signals against the noise floor of the radio.

73 and Happy DXing,

Mike
