[1000mp] The 100-pound gorilla

Hi Rob,

Concerning equalisation (or TOBW and audio-response management), the
difference here is that in a true IF-DSP-based transceiver, the radio
performs all these functions in the digital domain. (At least one would hope
that VS has implemented them in the DSP.) This is a huge advantage, as
unlike external analogue circuits, these processes do not add noise to the
system. The quantisation noise generated in the ADC is already there, and
processes executed within the DSP do not degrade it.

Another advantage is that the need for external audio "boxes" is often
eliminated. Many of these devices were not designed to operate in an RF
environment, and have EMC issues of their own.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

I'm sure it will have a lot to offer but I'm always baffled by mfrs. who
insist on including equalizers in their rigs. Anyone who wants an eq
can/will go out and spend a few hundred bucks on one and it will always be
vastly better than anything a mfr. sticks in a rig.
So the built in eq. never gets used because either the owner doesn't care
about equalization, or cares, but therefore goes out and gets an IHY,
Behringer, Symmtrix etc. The all in a box concept is appealing to people
going on dxpeditions (less stuff to lug along) but in this case, who is
going to pack a 100 lb. $14K rig?
