my suggestion may still have merit.
Whether he had a high swr or a full scale swr showing on the Mark.
It can still be a mismatch in the tuned circuit.

A full scale swr CAN indicate a short, but it can also indicate a gross mismatch between 
the exciter and the amp.
I've been there.
I had an amp that 'sometimes' would not accept a 12 meter signal at all and other times 
would load but just barely.

Adding some coax would be cheap, easy, and help to indicate if that was indeed the problem 
or not.
Certainly had nothing to lose by trying it.
