[1000mp] Any 'smaller' substitution for 1000MP ?

Alex, I read through the follow-up threads and unless I missed it, no one mentioned the Yaesu FT-897 (or 897D). I have a MKV and my 897 is used for road trips and Field Day. I recently used it during the 2004 CQ Worldwide CW Contest last November. I always spend Thanksgiving with my family in Florida and up until last year didn't operate CQWWCW because it always falls on Thanksgiving weekend. Last year I decided to toss-up an inverted V, hook-up the 897 and computer and give it a whirl portable. I was impressed with the way the 897 performed--no contest winning station but I managed several hundred contacts, 29 zones and 80 or so countries.
My 897 has a add-in 300hz CW filter, the matching external antenna tuner and the matching AC power supply mounted on the bottom. It makes for a very compact 100 watt HF station.
Navigating the menus takes a little getting used to but that's the only drawback I have with the rig. It has memories, will interface with most logging programs, a built-in keyer and many options/settings that make it a very "usable" radio.
It also has 3 CW memories/beacons you can program for Calling CQ, sending signal reports or other repetitive CW tasks.
Just my two cents.
Good luck

Hi guys,
I am really sorry to start this thread, but I do need to find a replacement
for my 1000mp.
Let me describe the situation:
we just recently moved into our own apartment and obviously it is smaller
then that one we used to rent.
there is no little shack for me any more. the corner computer desk is in our
bedroom and it is the one where MY RADIO gonna stay.
I had a bunch of senseless (from my prospective) conversations with XYL and
the only way out is to replace it with another _smaller_ rig. I really love
my radio but there is just no enough space to fit it on that desk. Here is
the picture of the desk -

The only place I was thinking about is that middle section under the hutch
where that silver "pen-holder" stays. Even there the radio is just 5" from
the front edge of the desk.
If you have any ideas how and where to put my existing MP
at/in/under/anywhere - I would REALLY appreciate it :)
In the meantime I want to hear your opinion which radio can replace the MP
with near-the-same quality from contesting and occasional dxing prospective
and be much smaller :)
