My 80 dipole is 1:1 at the CW end and about 8:1 or higher at the high end. I
would never expect any 'in the radio' tuner to handle that SWR.
There are some other ways to 'skin that cat' besides the one you chose
(which I am sure will work). You might have chosen to switch in home brew
tuner that would adjust the high end SWR down to about 3:1. Then the 'in the
radio' tuner (actually load matching device) could do its job. In fact, if
you chose to have a separate tuner that is switched in and out, you probably
could get the high end down to 1:1 and when you switch it out have the low
end 1:1 as well. Then you could switch off the 'in the radio' tuner and have
an extra 10 watts or so of output power.
