You can get on the air immediately right out of the box with the Mark V/Mark V Field, but the transmit audio will sound a little pinched on the lows. It took me about one week to understand what all of the menu settings can accomplish and to understand how to use all of the bells and whistles on receive.

As far as the receiver the Mark V/Mark V Field has a 2 kc bandwidth spacing dynamic range of 70 db. The INRAD first IF roofing filter mod increases dynamic range to 77 db. If you get into CW or phone DX or contesting pile ups anything below 70 db and the receiver pretty much falls apart due to IMD.

The 2 kc spacing dynamic range of the ICOM pro series is a s follows:

IC-756 52 db
IC-756 Pro 71 db
IC-56 ProII 70 db

  I HAVE BOTH A FT1000MKV FIELD AND A FT1000MKV CURRENTLY

THERE is a learning curve... but surprisingly less then you think... the
default settings will get you started and more buttons on the panel mean once set
up less (almost no) going into menus like the Icom

  > Things all out of whack is there a reset.

Yes... there are several resets.... one that resets all setting to factory
default (which is delineated in the manual) and one that will keep your
frequency/memory settings while resetting everything else

But the pro 11 looks good also

If you are a CW operator the Yaesu is hands down much better than the Icom!
If ylou are a contester (like me) then look at who wins the contests and what
rigs the serious contesters use.... almost all are Yaesu (actually 2 of them
  for SO2R.
