[1000mp] Signal Levels

Maybe it was just band conditions, but yesterday on 10-15-20 and =
Saturday
night/Sunday morning on 40-80 I found that the received signals were
incredibly loud. The dynamic range was so extreme that I turned off the =
AGC
and allowed the very loud guys to distort like crazy but not reduce the
RF-IFgain. This allowed me to work some of the weak Europeans on 40 =
meters
<the QRM was from other 40m DX stations since everything was split> (and =
10
and 15 meters).
At one point I went to Menu 9-1 and reduced the gain by 3 points which
helped. I could then use AGC much of the time and still copy medium weak
guys. When the East Coast folks began to call CQ in earnest on 20-15-10 =
it
was a real challenge to have the beam aimed "easterly" and dig out the =
weak
(weak in Idaho at least) people on 20-15-10. Again, turning off the AGC =
made
things work better with respect to the 'down under' stations.
Maybe I have some special problem and the gain balance from front end to
audio is out of whack on my FT1000MP. Did anyone else notice such =
problems?
If not I may have to run some transceiver checks.
Thanks for any responses.
