Hi Mac,
Glad you have no axe to grind. :-)
I'm not sure it's something I can explain. It's some quality
my brain hears and likes. I'm not talking about hi-fi stuff
here. I have an Icom 751A which no longer functions properly
but to my ear it had the nicest sounding receiver I think I
ever owned. On the other hand years back I bought a TS-440S
new which I hated the sound of no matter what speaker I
tried. Sold it in 6 months. Many have used them for years
and love that rig. In any case it's purely subjective. I
don't use headphones for casual listening and that's when I
start noticing if I like "the sound" of a receiver. Sorry
I've never analyzed past that. Maybe we have some sound
engineers out there with some theories.

I continue to read comments that appraise a communication
radio (or radios) on the basis of how they sound. There
has to be more to the story. CW or SSB, if the station is
intelligible in the presence of QRN and QRM and all of the
other "stuff," what is this thing called: "how it sounds?"
