I had an Icom 756 Pro I sold it, It never did sound quite right to
me(Artificial?).
My Boss had two ProII's with bad displays on fairly new units, plus the
band pass filters don't work well with 60 Meters so that shyed me away
from getting a ProII.
I got the Yaesu 1000mp Mark V Field, and at first it was a change from
the Icoms I was accustomed to (I had owned mostly Icoms for the past 12
years or so).
I did find the the Yaesu is easier to work on (repair, modify, etc.)
than the Icoms. It sounds far better and has a nicer feel to it (larger
radio).
The only thing I miss is the band scope (not a real biggie and I'm
working on that one...).
As far as I can tell the Yeasu seems to be a better radio, More
pleasant sounding and has a bunch of little things that make you stop
and say "hey that's cool" most of which we now take for granted but not
In the Icoms.
In the beginning I was a little unsure about the Yaesu, but the more I
use it the more I like it and the less I would go back to Icom any time
soon.
Now if I could only get Yaesu to send me the brochure I've asked for 5
times I'd be really pleased!
As far as the Mods go, Thats half the fun of ham radio (or in My case
90% of the fun). Besides any Ham worth his (or hers) license should be
able to do the mods with ease (unless you are disabled of course).
And as far as the Filters go. They could load it with stock filters
and jack up the price or not put them in, sell it for less, and let you
put in the Ones that you want. Personally I like the way they did it.
