Let him try CPU reset or to change 3V -CR2032 battery. It can help, but most probably your friend has the same problem like I had with my MP last year. Vertex Standard   resolve problem almost "overnite" by changing some integrated circuit in key unit. I paid few $$ for parts, but 2hours of labor cost me $140.00 and shippment at about $50.00. Anyway, I was without radio less then 2 weeks.
