Do you mean RF gain or IF gain? You probably are referring to the Menu
adjustment (9-1 I think).

In general I do not adjust the RF gain control on the front panel. The
exception is sometimes when listening on 160 or 80. On those occasions I
turn the AGC off and adjust RF and Audio controls. I find this improves
reception of weak signals (YMMV). An alternative way of doing this is to use
the Attenuator with the AGC on, but on very weak signals that does not
always produce the best result for me.
