I agree. When I got my Mark V in 2002, I had a 599zx left over from my
other station, and also found that it was much better than the Mark V's
noise reduction. But later, I got an NIR-12, and found it beat both of
them. What is important to me, is to reduce the background noise. The
front-end mod helped some, but still, I use the NIR-12. On 20 meters and
below, the VRF by itself can do better a good job of noise reduction. I do
however find that the CW DSP filters work quite well. Tom W6EIJ
