Hi Folk.
Been reading this thread all along and now I guess it's time for my two
cents worth. Been a big Yaesu fan since my first FT-101. Had all the
others, Kenwood twins, TS-430, 520, 830; Drake C line, Icom 751A (Great
rig). I have worked M/M stations and have used every competition class rig
out there. I had three and still own one Yaesu FT-890 that is out on loan.
Have the FT-897 for camping, the FT-100 in the truck, and of course my
favorite radio of ALL time FT-1000MP. Purchased in 1999 with all Yaesu
filters and use SP-8 and Heil Goldline mic or Heil headset and drive a QRO
HF-2500DX amp. Inrad front end mod has been done and don't care about key
clicks or CW. Had to send the rig back for a cracked crystal on the EDSP
board and this may or may not have been due to taking it to FD or M/M
stations. Since the problem was intermittent it is hard to tell. I use the
rig almost every day for SSB, RTTY and use it in most evry major contest
including CW. I can tune a signal on a crappy band to make it sound as if
he is the only station on the air and use the menus to tailor the xmit audio
for bradcast quality. I get superb reprts from all over the globe. Almost
dumped it for a MK V because the MK V was the latest and greatest but glad I
didn't. The ability to change filter combos is great. The MP is by far the
absolute best offering out there and if you should need service, the Yaesu
folks in their new facility offer quick turn around. There was a time
during the transition that they had a backlog. It just cost a lot to ship
these things across the country. Bottom line is if you spend $50,000 on a
Benz there is still a repair shop next to the showroom.
For what it's worth, on a visit to W1AW we had the FT-1000D next to Ten Tec
Omni V and the Omni heard weak CW on 20m better than the "D".
