*The FT-1000D is very reliable (many are still in use for 10
*years or more), sensitivity is superb (specs published are
*real; attested to with weak signal work), very quiet receiver
*(no "hiss" mods needed; MK V even after "hiss" mods is still
*worse); Lots of DSP functions but only a very few improved
*

I agree.

I have currently a FT-1000D, FT-1000MP, TS-950SDX, and various other
Kenwood/Icom's, and have had just about every Kenwood and ICOM made
(except for the new ProII), and the FT-1000D is still my favorite. The
RX is outstanding. I did use a 599ZX DSP unit with it in Russia because
of the high noise level there, but I would still take it over my
FT-1000MP. (Except for traveling! Did that and the FT1000D is HEAVY!)
