If the problem is with the thermal fuse on the inverter board for the
display, you should still see other indications of the radio's turning on
(the LEDs for the filter selections should be lit). If you don't see them
lighting, it's not the inverter board issue.
Also, if the display ever does come on (as you said it did later) then,
again, the thermal fuse is not the problem. Once the fuse pops...it's
popped.
Many users of the MP have reported (as I have) witnessing the VERY slow
(tens-of-seconds to a minute or so) turn on of the display. I don't think
anyone has definitively determined just what causes that. There have been
some guesses (cold ambient temperatures, prolonged off periods).
