dBu is dB above 1 microvolt. 0 dBu would then be -120 dBV.

I'm not sure what that would be.  I figured that an S-9 setting should be
close.  I have a friend who has some real test gear (and probably more
important, he knows how to use it), and when I get time, I will check it
out.  However, yesterday, I used the radio extensively after lowering the IF
gain to "9", and it didn't seem deaf at all.  I don't even know what dbu
is - the oscillator puts out a -73 dBm (S-9) signal and -107dBm (1
microvolt), which did not even register on the S-meter.  The IF gain control
covers some ground though, at 31, the -107 dBm was about S-8.  Perhaps this
control should have been on the front panel.  Tom
