This discussion about S-meters reminds me of a some measurements I took a
couple of years ago on my stock MP. You can read most of the details on
this website, compliments of Greg, W8WWW. He was kind enough to include my
MP-specific results in this article about S-meters in general. You can see
my portion of the article by clicking on the link that says, "Yaesu 1000MP:
More Data."
The bottom line is, despite all your efforts to tweak your MP so that -73dBm
is S9 (using the menu 9 adjustment), this will only be correct for one band,
and it will also change depending on whether you are "tuned" or "flat."
Furthermore, even for that one set of circumstances, only S-9 will be
right--the meter doesn't track very well with the "6 dB per S unit" rule,
especially for weaker signals.
So I just use my S-meter as a relative indicator most of the time. If I
really want to be more precise for some special reason, I have to make a
mental conversion from what the meter says to what a "true" meter would say.
My conversion chart is included in the website I mentioned above.
73,
Tom / W7GT
