I use a lot of strange antennas here at times connected to my MP, and
frequently have to do exactly what you have described.  At times I have
to use very low output, just a few watts, before the Autotune will
locate a null.  The SWR reading will generally then increase slightly as
I increase power output, but usually will still remain low enough for
the tuner to handle.  This procedure is likely a less stressful on the
tuner components as the relays and motors spin through their range
cycles, so I don't mind the occasional inconvenience.
