Bob, the MP is capable of very good audio on AM. I have the Mark V Field but
the setup is the same. First, I set mine for 25 watts out. Second, I have the
DSP in menu 4-4 at #4. This was done with a ham friend listening who lives about
1/2 mile away. My menu 5-9 is set at 6 KC bandpass. If you select the 2.4, your
audio will be truncated on AM, SSB will not be affected.

Be careful in setting your audio gain control. Manual says to advance it only
until you begin to get a slight indication on the ALC. Look at your wattmeter.
With modulation, the wattmeter should kick up. If you overmodulate, it will
swing down and distort. Use the built-in monitor to listen to yourself in your
headphones as another check against your signal.

If that doesn't fix it, you might be getting some RF into your
mike input.
