I think you are doing it right and yes as far as the signal goes 1 or 2
dB at the noise level does make a difference but once a signal is 15 db
below the noise then improving it to 25 dB below the noise is not a
detectable difference. It is this distortion beat or signal that I have
been talking about. It also sounds like the amplifier after the
roofing filter might not be as robust as it should be and that is
probably where some work could be don't that would improve the radio so
a roofing filter would have very little affect.
