The patch and mic inputs are more than "(sort of)" in parallel -
they're directly in parallel without any isolation. If one
connects the sound card output to the patch input, sounds in the
shack can be transmitted along with voice messages (voice keyer)
or AFSK/PSK (digital mode).
Use an interface, there are several schematics shown on the VA3CR
web site, to route voice mode (voice keyer) audio to the DVS2 jack
and digital mode audio to the PKT jack. Doing so will result in
muting the microphone when using soundcard audio.
As an alternative, use a DPDT relay to switch the front panel
input between the sound card output (with proper level attenuation
and transformer isolation) and the microphone. The PTT (or foot)
switch can be used to pull in the relay.
