Hi Dan,
I am glad to hear you did the mod. I did too and I do hear the difference.
You say you couldn't hear your rig's key clicks. Out of the box they all
do. What is deceptive is that the FT-1000MP's signal sounds great on
frequency. You have to tune off frequency to hear how badly they click. If
you want to hear an example of this listen to the big gun multi-multi
contest stations in the next CW contest. I believe the many of these
stations use unmodified FT-1000MPs. These rigs are used for contests only.
(A whole other subject is that multi-multis have incentive not to clean up
their signals.) Anyway tune across their signal and note how far up and down
the band you can detect it, easily 5 to 10 Khz. I'm not being critical of
contesters. I just offer this as a way of hearing how badly FT-1000MPs
click. Another way to do this is find a station that is clicking far from
his TX frequency. Look up his call on QRZ and see if he has web link or
photo of his shack posted. I've done this several times and found shack
photos that included FT-100MP. BTW I am aware that most rigs click out of
the box. I'm just saying that unmodified FT-1000MPs click quite badly.

Subject: [1000mp] Inrad CW Mod Install
Just a FYI to the group. I installed the Inrad CW mod in my 8 year old
FT-1000MP yesterday. It took about two hours to install and reassemble the
radio. The topology of my PCBs seemed a little smaller than the boards
illustrated in the service manual and the instructions that came with the
mod. I insulated the leads of the caps and resistor with tape and insulation
stripped from a small wire. To be honest, I never could detect any clicks on
another receiver, nor did I ever receive any reports of clicks. I did look
at the output siognal on a monitor scope before I did the mod, the raising
waveform looked good but the falling part of the waveform was straight down.
I haven't looked at the waveform after I did the mod. After assembling the
radio, I made a few CW contacts with good reports. I asked for reports of
clicks from the stations I worked and all said the signal was clean. I am
sure someone with a scope or spectrum analyzer could give me a better idea
of what the signal looks like. Installing the mod was much easier with a
copy of the service manual. I got mine at w7fg.com. If I can answer any
questions for anyone thinking of doing this mod please contact me.
