Al, et al -
When I got the Mark-V, I had only the stock configuration. Using the EDSP and
the shift/width controls, it gave very good performance. The only drawback was
AGC pumping of a strong (usually cw) signal still in the filter passband that you
can't knock out with shift/width, but also can't hear because of the EDSP. I
have since added a full complement of filters to suit my needs - narrow SSB for
DX'ing, and 250Hz for cw. It makes a good radio even better. I rarely use the
500 Hz filters at all. If you want to see how the filtering works and the
effects of shift and width, go on PSK and use the waterfall to see the impact of
the various controls.
If you don't want to spend a lot of $$$, general strategy is to start at the 8.2
IF and then move to the 455 to crisp it up further. On whether crystal or
mechanical filters, the mechanical have a higher shape factor which means they're
"wider" at the bottom than a crystal filter is. Go to the INRAD site and look at
some of the curves for examples. How your receiver sounds and how you want to
sound is a personal preference, so the only problem is that you have a lot of
choice to start from. Of course, any filters that you buy and later don't want
to keep will be easily re-sellable on this reflector - HI!
There are several good filter reference sheets on the ve3cr.net site - one is
mine - which lists the available options from INRAD and Yaesu. Good luck!
