Pete, I still remember my experience a few months ago which was the convers=
e of what you describe. I heard a VR2 (Hong Kong) on 160, and I called and =
called simplex (or so I thought)without success. He worked all the other lo=
cals who called him except me, and then went QRT. Shortly afterwards I disc=
overed that I had been transmitting split, with a 10 khz spread, from the l=
ast time I had used to the rig on 160, and didn't notice when I came on tha=
t the rig was still set for split operation. That was the first and last VR=
2 I had ever heard on 160. It was a hard reminder that I have to be careful=
to check to see whether the rig is set for split operation.

I suspect that this one, or its converse, is responsible for about half the=
=20
times you hear guys transmitting on the DX's frequency when they mean to be=
=20
split. Took me a long time to remember to look hard at the red light next
to the second VFO to be sure I was transmitting on it and not the main=20
one. And of course these were the times I'd used the 2nd VFO on receive to=
=20
pick the perfect transmit frequency.
