Apparently all MPs have this problem (don't know if the MK Vs or Fields
do).  Mine also drove me crazy when it was new.  What you hear is IF hiss
in the audio when using narrow CW filters and the DSP turned off. 
INRAD's "front end mod" reduced the hiss by adding some gain to the 1st
IF so that you can reduce the IF gain (via hidden menu item 9-1) two or
three notches (and still have the same overall receiver gain).  The mod
also improves the receiver's noise floor by about 4 dB.

The capacitor mod they include with the front end mod finishes the job of
eliminating the hiss.

The small amount of money that the mod kit costs is one of the best
investments you can make in your MP.
