[1000mp] 1000MP MkV and Packet/Digital

Okay, guess I have to give up and post to the list 'cause I can't find the
answer elsewhere.  I am trying to run RTTY and AMTOR (and ultimiately
PACTOR) using an outboard TNC. I would prefer to use the MkV in RTTY or
Packet modes for filter setting, etc.  I can send AMTOR with the TNC
(MFJ-1278) cabled to the Packet connector - but am locked to LSB mode for
that and need to be in USB mode. If I leave  that cable connection and
switch to RTTY (so I can select either sideband) then all I get when
sending is a solid carrier (from keying).

So, guess I need to be sending AFSK, not FSK. So,
1) how do I (can I?) switch it out of the FSK and into AFSK mode?
2) if I can do this, can I send through the Packet connector in the back or
do I HAVE to use the mic connector?
3) is there a way to get "Packet" mode to use USB instead of LSB?
4) should I just give up and direct key the FSK via the back connector and
use speaker for audio input to the TNC?
5) is there a way to get the MkV to mute the mic connection when being
keyed and receiving material from the back packet connector?
6) alternative recommendations?

I feel like I must be missing something "obvious" here and any help
appreciated.
