I guess our experience is just different.  In contests like CQWW and the 
ARRL DX, about the only consistency of "offset" I see is when I'm 
relatively close to someone strong on one side of me, which seems to result 
in people tuning to the other side in order to get away from that strong 
signal.  With 400 Hz filters, I can easily hear stations +/- 200 Hz, so it 
works fine for me to have my receiver return to zero beat with my 
transmitter each time.
