John,
I have also been an FT-990 user before moving to my
Mark V Field.
I have both radios one beside the other. Both are fine
radios. I can always listen to any station with both
of of them with very similar reports, but the sound is
different. I use to operate the Field most
of the time
The 990 is easier to setup (no setup) and more similar
to "analog" radios (like the 1000D I guess).
The MP is different.
When going for an upgrade for the 990 I seriously
considered the 1000D. If you look at any report, the
1000D outperforms the MP, but at the last minute I
changed my mind for the following reasons:
- If I go for a new radio I should go for a real
modern radio. If not, the 990 is good enough (except
for the double receiver and monitor lack)
- I use my main transceiver in field day contesting,
so the 13 kg of the Field is something to keep in
mind.
- I drive a Titan 425 amp and I don't care about
overdriving it with the 100 w of the Field
- Any existing CAT software supports the MP.
- The MP is very extended, so support option are
multiple.
- Its exceptional price.
The only problem I found is the strange SWR behaviour
reported by some OMs due to the tuner. It is working
ok now here.
I think it is difficult to decide.
Be happy with your choice!
Regards
Marcel, EA3IN
