Hi Scott,

The VL-1000 autotuner can memorise up to 256 tuning points. If you are using
the VL-1000 with an FT-1000MP, MkV or MkV Field as exciter, with the Band
Data 1 and 2 cables connected, pressing the F SET button will cause the
VL-1000 to key the exciter, get a tuning carrier, count the carrier
frequency and set the bandswitching relays in its LPF Unit accordingly. If
the autotuner is in the signal path, the excitation-frequency information
will cause the tuner to set itself to the memorised tuning point closest to
the actual frequency.

I have a VL-1000 with an IC-756Pro2 as exciter. Initially, I set up tuning
points on all bands 40 ~ 10m at 20 kHz or 10 kHz intervals (by pressing the
TUNE button) depending on band. When selecting a band on the exciter, I
select RTTY mode, press F SET, then select the desired operating mode. The
retuning process is as described above. The additional step (selecting RTTY)
is necessary, as the Icom exciter has no equivalent to the REMOTE jack on
the FT-1000MP series.

The autotuner in the exciter should always be disabled when driving the
VL-1000. It is not needed, as the amplifier's input impedance is 50 ohms
resistive across the entire frequency range of the amplifier.

Cheers for now, 73,

Related to this, can anyone clarify how the VL-1000 tuner is supposed to
handle things? I know that mine never retunes automagically, I always
have to push the TUNE button when moving to different frequencies or bands,
even if it is to the same "channels" often used. I assume from this that
it has no memory of previous settings.
