That's true for some of the amps including some of the Alphas (mainly
older ones), depends on the keying voltage and current. HOWEVER, the
new 99s, 89 and 87s are safe to key directly from the MP band data
connector bypassing the internal relay. The new 99 keying voltage is
12V and only 7ma, so its well within the 15V 100ma specs of the yaesu
1000MP. I've been doing this with the 99 and 89 and its as slick as
butter and no smoke, puffs, hiss.... With the 89, qsk is unreal with
the pin diode switching, the 99 vacuum relay is noisy. The older 99
amps have 24V keying so probably better to use the buffer. Also, direct
keying is not recommended with the Icom PRO2 etc which I use a buffer

You should buffer the puny PTT from the MP's band data plug, or risk
