[1000mp] FTV-1000 problems.

I have a question for anyone on the list who has the 6 meter transverter. A
friend is selling me his transverter, just purchased in March, which appears
to work fine with his Mark V. I brought it to my house, and after hooking
it up, I had problems with the power output on SSB and the sensitivity on
receive. On CW, all five power LEDs light with very little drive,
indicating full 200 watt power output, exactly as the manual indicates.
However, on SSB, even with the power knob turned fully Clockwise (full
power) and the mic gain up almost all the way, I get only two of the lights
to light (a meter would have been so much better), indicating low output.
The manual indicates that even on SSB, all the lights should light. When I
unplugged the ALC cable, I got an additional light, and at most, four on the
peaks - but it seems that the power and drive should not have to be turned
up all the way.

The ALC has been a problem in the past, for example, with my SB-220 with the
ALC, I could get only 50 watts maximum (CW or SSB), regardless of class A or
AB position. But I solved it, at least with respect to the linear, by not
using the ALC, and instead driving the linear in the class A position, to
prevent overdriving.

There also seems to be a sensitivity issue. Here in the LA area (within a
few mile radius of my house), several other hams got on frequency when I was
testing the radio, and then a ham in San Diego joined the group. Everyone
reported the San Diego ham as about 10 to 20 db over nine, for me, I could
barely copy him if I used headphones. My antenna is a SteppIR three element
Yagi up 54 feet, and the coax is 100 feet of 9913 coax.

I wondering if anyother hams on the list have had power or sensitivity
issues with the FTV-1000, and how they were resolved. Tom W6EIJ
