Brian,

I built an FH-1 for my Mk V using the schematic from an MP manual.  Mine has
the same problem that you describe.  I think this is a design fault in the
MP, although sometimes I think that wrapping the plug end of the cable a
couple of times around a high-permeability torroid helps.  The keypad has
never been as reliable as the radio, although I have been able to use it in
a few "for fun" contests.
