Hi Guys,
The primary reason you should use an interface (or relay box, or a Dow Key
if you can find one) is because of the switching relay network in the MP or
most of the solid state rigs today will not handle more that 100ma, where
the old tube rig, voltage an current ratings of the of the relay in the
radio will handle usually 500ma or better, to switch the amp from receive to
transmit. Here is and example, if you have Drake, Swan or old Kenwood's
mainly the tube variety the relay in the radio is rated at least 500ma to 1
amp. If you have any of the old amps such as Heath or Kenwood and you
directly connected the MP to one of them you will smell smoke from the
little relay inside, now this does not count for Ameritron they are new amps
for today's radio's.

Note: If you have an MP and a Ameritron amp, you don't really need the
interface or box, in this case it is cheap insurance if there is a surge to
the relay contacts that box or the Ameritron interface will absorb the surge
and not burn the radio. I look at it this way for 39.95 it is cheap enough
for you MP.

I hope I shed some light on this topic, in my 28 years as a ham I can say I
have been there with amps an radio's, lot's of them.

73's,
Craig WA2TWF
