    Have you thought about the alternatives of flat vs. tuned pre-amps?
That does change the gain and, for example, the flat position provides more
gain on 160 than the tuned position - memory 8-4.  I thought I had a bad
Beverage connection until I checked the preamp setting and changed it to
"flat".
