[1000mp] Adjusting the MP's RF output/speech processor settings

I have a used, but new-to-me, 1000MP. This weekend, for the first time
since I've owned it, I seriously used the MP on phone with an amplifier
(in CQWW). I found the MP a difficult beast to tame when using its
speech processor - it seemed very hard to adjust the MP's power output
level such that the amp's grid protection circuitry would be happy. I
either had a scant 800W out with very reasonable grid current or, after
tweaking the rf output a touch (just a few degrees of rotation - VERY
hard to do), I was overdriving the amp to the point that the protection
would trip. On CW or with a TS-940 I experience no such problem. I
read the manual, but it did not help - perhaps I misread it, but it
actually seemed to mistate somewhat the relationship of the
mic/processor/RFout controls.
Any ideas - or is this just another way of indicating that CW is the
better mode? ;-)
