Tom,
Get out your trusty voltmeter and check to see that the RS-232 levels are
correct. They should be greater than 3V and less than -3V. Often the levels
will be +-5, +-10 or +-12. If you lost one side, the data would get pretty
garbled. Also make sure your baud rate, parity, number of bits and number of
stop bits are set correctly. CT should do this for you, but maybe it lets
you set it, I don't know. You might try a different control program to see
if it works any better. If you want to try my slide rule dial program, you
can download it off of va3cr's site or I can send it to you. If you know
Visual Basic, you can write a quick test program pretty easily. See my
article in Feb. '02 QST.

Subject: [1000mp] computer control problem
I have an FT1000 MkV that developed a problem during last weekend's
contest - looking for a suggestion on what to check/replace. The front
panel display still flashes "CAT".
Looks like I can send commands to it via the RS-232 port and it behaves
mostly correctly. I use CT contest software. If I send the command to
change to a new frequency, like 7005, the radio changes correctly. But if
I try to change bands via CT, it switches between 10 and 160m using the band
up/down command (alt-F1, alt-f2). On the receive side I can not read the
current frequency (alt-J). It appears to say 28013.7 all the time. Is
this likely to be the chip that makes the RS-232 port work?
