[1000mp] computer control problem

I have an FT1000 MkV that developed a problem during last weekend's contest - looking for a suggestion on what to check/replace. The front panel display still flashes "CAT".

Looks like I can send commands to it via the RS-232 port and it behaves mostly correctly. I use CT contest software. If I send the command to change to a new frequency, like 7005, the radio changes correctly. But if I try to change bands via CT, it switches between 10 and 160m using the band up/down command (alt-F1, alt-f2). On the receive side I can not read the current frequency (alt-J). It appears to say 28013.7 all the time. Is this likely to be the chip that makes the RS-232 port work?
