for that matter, telephone wire and RJ-11 plugs make a perfectly adequate 
serial cable -- my PIEXX/TS-930 uses that, and although it's a little 
RF-sensitive it works great.  They even make adapters that have an RJ-11 
jack on one end and a DB-9 on the other to connect directly to a standard 
COM port.
