I bought the Pelican 1600 for my FT1000MP when I went to V26 last October.
I would not check it as it almost completely fills the case - maybe one inch
of foam around the perimeter of the radio - but it DOES fit in the overhead.

Make sure to buy one of those little luggage carts as the case plus the rig
weighs a metric ton (at least it feels that way after carrying it for a
minute or two). I bought my cart at KMart of all places for under $10.

Getting on the puddle jumper in San Juan was not an issue as they placed it
in the back of the plane in the luggage compartment with NO issues. The
only problem I had was coming back through Miami. They have this STUPID box
cutout on the security belt and anything that won't go through the opening
doesn't go on board. After I patiently showed the radio to 5 different
people they LIFTED the cutout and let it go through. It also helped that I
was flying First Class... they checked.

Hope this helps.
