More info on carrying radios on airplanes....

If u carry on:
bring the instruction manual and your original purchase receipt of the
radios and your ham license. Carry a couple of Xerox copies of all these
things to hand to officers if needed. Be ready to be thoroughly inspected
at domestic airports including swipe samples that test for gun powder and
explosives (this is beyond the x-ray stop-over). Wear a belly pouch with
all metal u carry in that with NOTHING made of metal on your person... I was
halted for the metal clasp that holds an elastic pony tail hair band...
about 3 mm long. Be ready to take off ur shoes and, of course, ur hat. The
really careful traveler will have quick joint plugs and power cables in the
box to demonstrate the turn=on of the radio, etc.

Obey the size restrictions of carry on and the limit on the number of pieces
because at the last minute u definitely do not want to be re-packing on the
floor of the airport gates.

If u check delicate or high thieft items:

Pack ur radio in the famous Pelican case and then put that case inside an
old beaten up suitcase to camo it from knowledgable thieves. If u must pack
into a cardboard box, mark the box "baby toys" or some other repulsive
label... maybe put a soiled diaper on top inside. A friend of mine has
diapers that look soiled (but are oderless) all over his back seat in his L.
A. automobile.... no thieft of it so far.

Mark the outside of all checked bags with a colorful diagram or shape on all
four sides to avoid someone mistaking ur bag for theirs. Put your name and
adr inside all bags as well as outside.
Book non-stop flights to avoid ur bags lying somewhere unattended at a
transfer point.

Gud luck, de K4VUD
