In response to Thomas' (DK3DUA's) posting, I offer the following. I
received advice from Barry, N1EU and George (W2VJN) at Inrad regarding the
filter choices for my new (used) Mark V and then did the following
installations:
1 Inrad # 705c 500 Hz Collins CW filter in sub-receiver 2d IF
1 Inrad # 703c 400 Hz CW filter in 3d IF of main receiver (cascaded with
stock 500 Hz CW filter in 2d IF)
1 Inrad # 711b 1.8 kHz SSB filter in 2d IF of main receiver
1 Inrad # 714c 1.8 kHz SSB filter in 3d IF of main receiver
On CW, I now have a choice of 1.8/1.8 kHz or 500/400Hz cascaded filters
via the Normal and Narrow 1 buttons.
On SSB, I have chosen menu settings that give me ATT/6.0 kHz, 2.4/2.4 kHz,
and 1.8/1.8 Khz filter settings via the Normal, Narrow 1 and Narrow 2 buttons.
My preliminary finding is that these filters work very well. They seem
very unintrusive and simply do their job. One surprise is that the Inrad
1.8 kHz SSB filters are quite useable under almost any conditions (even
reducing QRN to some extent). The received audio is still quite readable in
this narrrow setting, surprisingly so based on my experience with other
transceivers.
My main caution is that installing the filters is best done as a one-time
project. The worst part of the exercise is removing the multiple pieces of
metal cladding from the Mark V, saving all the many screws, and then
replacing everything. So be sure you have chosen the correct filters for
your needs before digging in.
