SSB operators might prefer the Mark V for two reasons -- the IDBT and
class A features. But these two features don't help the CW opertor at
all. The majority of us do not need 200 watts to drive our amplifiers,
either.
These things, plus the fact that filter selection versatility suffers,
are the reasons why I have not bought a Mark V.
I believe that the introduction of the Mark V "Field" model is a smart
move by Yaesu. This makes it a 100-watt rig that is less costly and more
portable for use by DXpeditions and Field Day. Hopefully, the "Field"
model has also reverted back to a full top cover rather than the exposed
heat sink.
Meanwhile, I'm eagerly watching Ten-Tec's progress on the Orion, and I'm
hoping that Kenwood will get wise and come out with something for DXers
and contesters with xtal filters ahead of the IF DSP to replace the
TS-870S.
